Dear YES Prep families,
We hope you are having a safe and fun summer. We are just three weeks away from the start of school. The first day of school for our secondary students is Monday, August 15, and the first day of school for our elementary students is Thursday, August 18. Our teachers and staff are excited to welcome students back for another safe, successful and fun school year. Please continue to be on the lookout for more back-to-school information in the coming weeks to ensure your child is prepared for the first day.

GETTING READY FOR BACK TO SCHOOL
Last week, all families should have received our back-to-school prep email, which included details on filling out the Back-to-School Forms in Skyward, and an announcement that there will be no uniforms for the upcoming school year, and we will once again be offering free breakfast and lunch at all schools. For more back-to-school information, please visit our back-to-school page. Please note, the school supplies list will be shared by each individual school. You can find their back-to-school site by clicking on the link above.
BACK-TO-SCHOOL FORMS
You can visit Skyward Family Access to fill out the Back-to-School forms. All returning and new students will need to complete these forms. For new families, you should have received an email inviting you to sign up for Skyward last week. The deadline to complete Back to School forms is Friday, August 12.

NEW HEALTH INSTRUCTION IN 8TH GRADE CURRICULUM
YES Prep’s Board of Trustees has approved the inclusion of human sexuality instruction into the district’s eighth-grade Health I curriculum, as aligned to the required Texas Knowledge and Skills. We invite families to preview full details about any human sexuality instruction, the Health I textbook and lesson overviews on the district’s website.
Please note, this does not apply to Northbrook Middle. Their health curriculum is through Spring Branch ISD.
SENIOR YEAR COLLEGE APPLICATION TIMELINE – FAMILY CONVERSATION GUIDE
With the Class of 2023 beginning their senior year on August 15, our College Initiatives team wants to support your family as you prepare for your senior to start their final year of high school.
College Initiatives has created the Class of 2023: Senior Year College Application Timeline - Family Conversation Guide (click on the following links to view in English or Spanish). This guide includes a schedule of milestones to expect during the college application cycle. These are activities your senior will be completing, or participating in, during the fall of their senior year through their Seminar class. Also included are some of the things you can look forward to next spring.
In the guide, you will also find guiding questions your family can use to have conversations going into the start of the school year. We hope these questions can help identify topics you may want to discuss with your son or daughter’s college counselor when you meet with them during the college counseling process. More information will be shared in future family communications.
HOW TO PREPARE DURING THE SUMMER FOR YOUR FIRST YEAR IN COLLEGE - FAMILY CONVERSATION GUIDE
The YES Prep Alumni Support team would like to support our Class of 2022, to ensure students who plan to go to college follow through with their plan and prevent what is called “summer melt.” Summer melt is when students' motivation to attend college "melts" away during the “heat” of summer between the end of high school and the beginning of college. This can happen as barriers arise caused by university policies, missing paperwork, finances and many other causes.
Now through early August is a crucial time to prepare for college in the fall. Below are the top five conversations you should be having as a family with your son or daughter:
- Finances
- College orientation and registration
- Traveling to and learning on campus
- Technology
- Talk about college in general

Esperamos que estén teniendo un verano seguro y divertido. Estamos a solo tres semanas del comienzo de la escuela. El primer día de clases para nuestros estudiantes de secundaria (grados 6-12) es el lunes 15 de agosto y el primer día de clases para nuestros estudiantes de primaria es el jueves 18 de agosto. PREPARÁNDOSE PARA EL REGRESO A LA ESCUELA

NUEVA INSTRUCCIÓN EN SALUD EN CURRÍCULO DE 8º GRADO
El Consejo Directivo (Board of Trustees) de YES Prep ha aprobado la inclusión de instrucción sobre sexualidad humana en el plan de estudios de Salud I de octavo grado del distrito, alineado con los Conocimientos y Habilidades de Texas requeridos. Invitamos a las familias a ver los detalles completos sobre cualquier instrucción sobre sexualidad humana, el libro de texto de Salud I y los resúmenes de lecciones en el sitio web del distrito.
Tenga en cuenta que esto no se aplica a Northbrook Middle. Su plan de estudios de salud es a través de Spring Branch ISD.

College Initiatives ha creado la Clase de 2023: Cronología de la solicitud universitaria del último año - Guía de conversación familiar (haga clic en los siguientes enlaces para ver en inglés o español). Esta guía incluye un cronograma de hitos a esperar durante el ciclo de solicitud de ingreso a la universidad. Estas son actividades que su hijo en el grado 12 completará o en las que participará durante el otoño de su último año a través de su clase Seminario. En la guía, también encontrará preguntas de orientación que su familia puede usar para tener conversaciones al comienzo del año escolar. CÓMO PREPARARSE DURANTE EL VERANO PARA SU PRIMER AÑO EN LA UNIVERSIDAD - GUÍA DE CONVERSACIÓN FAMILIAR
El equipo de Alumni Support (apoyo para exalumnos) de YES Prep quisiera apoyar a nuestra Clase de 2022, para garantizar que los estudiantes que planean ir a la universidad cumplan con su plan y no se desanimen durante el verano cuando pueden surgir barreras causadas por políticas universitarias, papeleo faltante, finanzas y muchas otras causas.
Desde ahora hasta principios de agosto es un momento crucial para prepararse para la universidad en el otoño. A continuación, se encuentran las cinco conversaciones principales que debe tener como familia con su hijo o hija:
- Finanzas

Esta es la primera de varias guías de conversación que nuestro equipo de apoyo para ex alumnos ha creado para un "Kit de inicio para el primer año de la universidad". Se compartirán más recursos a lo largo del año escolar en nuestras próximas Actualizaciones Familiares mensuales.
