Dear YES Prep families,
December has arrived and we are almost two weeks away from winter break! As we head into the final stretch of the 2022 calendar year, we look forward to seeing your child in school and making sure they complete all their coursework for this first semester so that they are ready to start strong the second half of the school year.
Before we dive into the Family Update, we want to take this opportunity to commemorate Special Education Day. ALL our students deserve a space where they are physically and intellectually safe. We welcome you to read about just one of our many teachers who are accomplishing this in their classroom. Samantha Barlow is an exceptional YSTEP teacher at our Brays Oaks Secondary campus. ACADEMIC CALENDAR FOR 2023-2024 SCHOOL YEAR - VOTE BY DEC. 9
Families, we have two working drafts of the 2023-2024 Academic Calendar. Your input is critical in determining the final calendar we will recommend to the YES Prep Board of Directors. Please share with us your preference by voting here. Voting ends December 9, 2022.
DECEMBER POSSIP PULSE CHECK - DEADLINE DEC. 4
Thanks for sharing your experience with your campus using the quick and easy monthly Possip Pulse Check! So far this year, we have heard from 31% of YES Prep families. On the November Pulse Check, 81% of families reported that they were satisfied with their campus. When those who were “mostly” satisfied were added in, the percentage went up to 94%! The specific praise for what is working and feedback about areas that need improvement are both incredibly helpful to the campus.
The final pulse check for the fall semester is now open and will close at midnight on Sunday, December 4. Please take a moment to respond via text or email and spread some joy as we head into the winter break.

TEACHER PATHWAY FAMILY SURVEY – DEADLINE DEC. 5
Families of our pre-K through 2nd-grade students and families of students in our YSTEP, SHINE, BASE, GLOW and SOAR programs, you should have received an email for the Teacher Pathway Family Survey back in November from Panorama Education. The deadline to submit the survey is December 5. This survey invites you to provide feedback on two of your child’s teachers. Please allow 10-20 minutes to complete each survey. Thank you in advance for your feedback!
WISHING JUNIORS GOOD LUCK ON THE SAT TOMORROW
Tomorrow, 11th graders across the district will sit for their first official SAT. Juniors have spent all the second quarter preparing for this exam, getting lessons on common SAT concepts and using Khan Academy's Official SAT practice in Junior Seminar. In fact, these juniors have been so dedicated to preparing on Khan Academy that for the two weeks in November Northline, Southside and Southeast secondary schools had the highest average minutes of any high schools in the United States in Khan Academy’s Khanatholon! A special shout out to the founding class of YES Prep Northline Secondary who have been preparing on average 77 minutes a week on Khan!

2023 BROTHERHOOD & SISTERHOOD SUMMIT – REGISTER BY DEC. 15
The 2023 Brotherhood & Sisterhood Summit will be held on Saturday, February 4, 2023, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at YES Prep Southside Secondary. This summit is a safe space for high school students who identify as Black/African American where they can connect with one another, share their stories and learn more about their identity. This year’s theme stemmed from wanting to celebrate the positive, rich and dynamic Black culture in all ways possible.
Registration opens Monday, December 5, and closes Thursday, December 15. Space is limited so please encourage your child(ren) to register as soon as possible! For more information, visit yesprep.org/brosissummit or reach out to your campus contact. We look forward to seeing you!
EMERGENT BILINGUAL FAMILY EVENT IN JANUARY
We are excited to host an online event in January for families of our Emergent Bilingual students. If your student speaks a language other than English most of the time or you speak a language other than English at home, this event is for you!
Our Emergent Bilingual Family Night will be online on Wednesday, January 25. We’ll broadcast in English from 6-6:45 p.m. and in Spanish from 7-7:45 p.m. During this event, you’ll learn more about how to support your student on the TELPAS test. The TELPAS assesses students’ English language proficiency in four domains: listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Stay on the lookout for communication from your campus with the links to join the online event and a registration form. We will be giving away materials that you can use at home with your student!
FAFSA/TAFSA PRIORITY DEADLINE IS JANUARY 15
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TASFA) opened on October 1. For colleges in Texas, January 15 is the priority deadline... which is right around the corner!
FAMILIES WITH SENIORS: Reminder that the State of Texas requires every high school senior to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to graduate. We know 65% of our seniors have completed either the FAFSA or TASFA already. If your senior has not, please work with your school's college counselors to submit the FAFSA or TASFA before winter break.
FAMILIES WITH STUDENTS IN COLLEGE: Renewal of the FAFSA or TASFA is required each year for continued financial aid. Make sure to check your child’s college to learn if they have an earlier institutional deadline to submit the FAFSA/TAFSA.

YES PREP’S REUNIFICATION PLAN
The safety and security of our students, staff and families are our top priority. For this reason, we have created a district-wide reunification plan. In case of an emergency evacuation, students and staff will be transported to an off-site location where students will be reunited with their approved guardians. This location will be communicated to families via media and internal YES Prep communication channels. Guardians will be required to bring a photo ID to pick up their child.
It is important to know that during an emergency evacuation event families should not go to the schools unless asked to. This is important so as not to cause delays in emergency response reaching the campus. For additional information about YES Prep’s standard response protocol to emergency events, click here.

ENCUESTA FAMLIAR “POSSIP FAMILY PULSE CHECK” - FECHA LÍMITE 4 DE DIC.
¡Gracias por compartir su experiencia con su escuela utilizando la encuesta familiar “Possip Pulse Check”. Desde el inicio de estas encuestas mensuales, el 31% de las familias de YES Prep han respondido. En la encuesta de noviembre, el 81% de las familias informaron que estaban satisfechas con su escuela. Cuando se agregaron aquellos que estaban "en su mayoría" satisfechos, ¡el porcentaje subió al 94%! Los elogios específicos por lo que está funcionando y los comentarios sobre las áreas que necesitan mejorar son increíblemente útiles para las escuelas.

ENCUESTA FAMILIAR SOBRE MAESTROS “TEACHER PATHWAY”
Familias de nuestros estudiantes de prekínder a segundo grado y familias de estudiantes en nuestros programas YSTEP, SHINE, BASE, GLOW y SOAR, deberían haber recibido un correo electrónico para la encuesta familiar sobre maestros “Teacher Pathway” en noviembre de Panorama Education. La fecha límite para enviar la encuesta es el 5 de diciembre. Esta encuesta lo invita a dar su opinión sobre dos de los maestros de su hijo/a. DESEANDOLE BUENA SUERTE A LOS ESTUDIANTES DE GRADO 11 EN EL SAT DE MAÑANA
Mañana, los estudiantes de grado 11 de todo el distrito se presentarán para su primer SAT oficial. Estos estudiantes han pasado todo el segundo trimestre preparándose para este examen, recibiendo lecciones sobre conceptos comunes del SAT y usando la práctica oficial del SAT de Khan Academy en sus clases de Junior Seminar. De hecho, estos jóvenes han estado tan dedicados a prepararse en Khan Academy que durante las dos semanas de noviembre las escuelas secundarias Northline, Southside y Southeast tuvieron el promedio de minutos más alto de todas las escuelas secundarias de los Estados Unidos en el Khanatholon de Khan Academy. ¡Un reconocimiento especial a la clase fundadora de YES Prep Northline que se ha estado preparando en promedio 77 minutos a la semana en Khan!

CUMBRE DE “BROTHERHOOD Y SISTERHOOD” DEL 2023: INSCRIBASE PARA EL 15 DE DIC.
El Cumbre de “Brotherhood y Sisterhood” del 2023 se llevará a cabo el sábado, 4 de febrero, de 9 a.m. a 2 p.m. en la secundaria YES Prep Southside. Esta cumbre es un espacio seguro para estudiantes de secundaria que se identifican como negros/afroamericanos donde pueden conectarse entre sí, compartir sus historias y aprender más sobre su identidad. El tema de este año surgió de querer celebrar la cultura negra positiva, rica y dinámica de todas las formas posibles.

EVENTO FAMILIAR EMERGENTE BILINGÜE EN ENERO
Estamos emocionados de organizar un evento en línea en enero para las familias de nuestros estudiantes bilingües emergentes. Si su estudiante habla un idioma que no sea inglés la mayor parte del tiempo o usted habla un idioma que no sea inglés en casa, ¡este evento es para usted!
Nuestra Noche Familiar Bilingüe Emergente estará en línea el miércoles, 25 de enero. Transmitiremos en inglés de 6 a 6:45 p.m. y en español de 7 a 7:45 p.m. Durante este evento, aprenderá más sobre cómo apoyar a su estudiante en el examen TELPAS. El TELPAS evalúa el dominio del idioma inglés de los estudiantes en cuatro dominios: escuchar, hablar, leer y escribir.
Esté atento a la comunicación de su escuela con los enlaces para unirse al evento en línea y un formulario de inscripción. ¡Estaremos regalando materiales que puede usar en casa con su hijo/a!
LA FECHA LÍMITE DE PRIORIDAD DE FAFSA/TAFSA ES EL 15 DE ENERO
La Solicitud Gratuita de Ayuda Federal para Estudiantes (FAFSA) y la Solicitud de Ayuda Financiera Estatal de Texas (TASFA) se abrieron el 1 de octubre. Para las universidades de Texas, el 15 de enero es la fecha límite prioritaria... ¡que está a la vuelta de la esquina!
FAMILIAS CON ESTUDIANTES EN EL 12 GRADO: Recordatorio de que el Estado de Texas requiere que todos los estudiantes en el grado 12 presenten la FAFSA para graduarse. Sabemos que el 65% de nuestros seniors ya completaron la FAFSA o la TASFA. Si su hijo no lo ha hecho, trabaje con los consejeros universitarios de su escuela para enviar la FAFSA o TASFA antes de las vacaciones de invierno.
FAMILIAS CON ESTUDIANTES EN LA UNIVERSIDAD: Se requiere la renovación de la FAFSA o TASFA cada año para continuar con la ayuda financiera. Asegúrese de verificar con la universidad de su hijo/a para saber cuál es su fecha límite para enviar la FAFSA/TAFSA.

PLAN DE REUNIFICACIÓN DE YES PREP
La seguridad y protección de nuestros estudiantes, personal y familias son nuestra máxima prioridad. Por esta razón, hemos creado un plan de reunificación para el distrito. En caso de una evacuación de emergencia, los estudiantes y el personal serán transportados a otro sitio donde los estudiantes se reunirán con sus familiares aprobados. Esta sitio se comunicará a las familias a través de los medios de comunicación y los canales de comunicación internos de YES Prep. Se requerirá que los familiares traigan una identificación con foto para recoger a su hijo/a.
Es importante saber que durante un evento de evacuación de emergencia, las familias no deben ir a las escuelas a menos que se les pida. Esto es importante para no interferir con la respuesta de emergencia que llega a la escuela.
